How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It
by Joseph Califano, Jr.

High Society

Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society.

Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

Facts about Drug Treatment
Julie Smith

Let's face it. One of the perennial societal problems the whole world is facing right now is drug addiction. It seems like we are losing every one of our people, youth especially, to substance abuse that continuously destroy lives, damage the future, and hurt our economy.
Yet along with this dilemma is the never-ending search for the possible--and the best--form of cure or prevention to such vice. Thus, we are now currently introduced to what is known as drug treatment.

What is Drug Treatment?
Drug treatment typically involves steps to help you withdraw from using drugs, followed by counseling and attending self-help groups to help you resist using the addictive drug again. Drug treatment for individuals who abuse drugs but are not yet addicted to them mostly consists of behavioral therapies, such as psychotherapy, counseling, support groups, or family therapy. But drug treatment for drug addicts often involves a combination of behavioral therapies and medications.

Medications, such as methadone or LAAM (levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol), are effective in suppressing the withdrawal symptoms and drug craving associated with narcotic addiction, thus reducing illicit drug use and improving the chances of the individual remaining in treatment.
The basic form of Withdrawal therapy given is to substitute the patient to a comparable drug that produces milder withdrawal symptoms, and then gradually taper off the substitute medication. The medication most often used is Methadone which is given orally once a day.

Patients are started with the lowest dose that gradually reduces the withdrawal and then slowly the dosage is reduced. Substitutes are also used for withdrawal from sedatives. The risk of a relapse looms even after patient goes through withdrawal. This process of Withdrawal Therapy is also called Drug Detox or detoxification.

Drug Treatment Models
The second part of Drug Treatment is Mental Therapy. Mental Therapy is usually administered by a well trained psychiatrist at the drug treatment center. The psychiatrist helps the drug addict by rebuilding his thought process and helping him make clear cut decisions thus reducing the chances of a relapse. Drug addicts usually loose the ability to think normally and persist taking drugs even though they fully understand that drugs are harmful to them. The psychiatrists change this thinking of the drug addicts and make them understand that the addicts can lead a normal life without drugs.

The third part of drug treatment is restoring the Emotional feelings of the drug addict. The majorities of drugs on the streets are extremely damaging to the mind and cause damage to the brains ability to think. There are specialized counselors in drug rehab centers who take one to one meetings, family meetings and group counseling to remove the emotional effects caused due to prolonged use of drugs.

Most drug addicts use drugs to cover up certain emotions. A drug treatment center offers them the opportunity to get back in touch with these emotions.

Breaking a drug addiction involves taking drug treatment and needs support from your doctor, family, friends and others who have an addiction, as well as inpatient and outpatient treatment. The ultimate goal of drug treatment is to enable the drug addict to achieve lasting abstinence from drug use and help him lead a normal life in the future free from drugs.

These maybe aren't a lot, but there are certainly bold steps in curbing the problem. We cannot definitely expect a drug-free zone anytime soon, but little by little, with drug treatments, we may actually get there.
