How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It
by Joseph Califano, Jr.

High Society

Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society.

Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

Most drug offenses are felonies but some are misdemeanors. Regardless of this, the consequences of being charged with a drug offense in Maryland are serious. It is absolutely critical to retain an experienced drug offense lawyer as quickly as possible after your arrest.

The punishment for drug-related crimes vary greatly and depend on the drug involved, the quantity of the drug involved, and your criminal record. First-time offenders have a better chance of a lesser punishment or of having the case dismissed entirely. If you are a repeat offender, your attorney can simply try to get your jail time reduced.

According to statistics, more people are arrested for drug crimes than any other federal crime. Possession of drugs is the most common offense, and marijuana is the most commonly possessed drug in the United States. Maryland is known for its stiff drug penalties. Federal charges come with high mandatory minimum sentences, and chances for parole are quite limited in Maryland. Even possessing a small amount of a drug can get you charged with intent to distribute, and you can end up in prison if you possess equipment that is used in the manufacture of drugs or even if you have counterfeit drugs on your person.
