How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It
by Joseph Califano, Jr.

High Society

Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society.

Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

Chewing Tobacco Is No Better Than Smoking Tobacco
Aurther Shoko

There is a growing misconception especially amongst teenage tobacco users that smokeless tobacco is healthier than smoking tobacco. Smokeless tobacco includes chew tobacco and snuff. The campaign to discourage people from smoking cigarettes appears to have yielded much results. Many people are quite aware of the dangers of smoking because of the much publicized 4000 toxins and 599 cigarette ingredients.

Travelogues To The Nine Circles And Back
In a fearful time, cable TV and the Internet are full of shows about the perils of traveling.

On the other hand, the emphasize on smoking tobacco has in fact unknowingly painted a picture of safety and health when it comes to smokeless tobacco. This is because the stop smoking campaign overshadowed the effects and dangers of other forms of nicotine delivery and tobacco use such as chewing tobacco.

This is partly the reason behind the raise in the use of chewing tobacco amongst teenagers apart from the high cost of cigarettes and the difficult with which authorities can detect chewing tobacco. In fact more teens are also switching to cigar smoking under the same misconception that cigars are safer because no smoke is inhaled.

In reality tobacco is a harmful product. The United Nations's WHO has since declared tobacco a deadly product which can not be reconciled with public health. Chewing tobacco involves placing a chunk of tobacco into the mouth and allowing nicotine to be absorbed by mouth membranes into the bloodstream and finally reaching the brain.

The most popular health effects of chewing tobacco use include mouth cancer, gum cancer, gum recession, teeth discoloration, throat cancer, stomach cancer and periodontal disease characterized by severe bad breath amongst chewing tobacco users. These health problems are devastating and often lead to permanent disability and death. Just like salt and high blood pressure chewing tobacco also causes blood pressure spikes in hypertensive patients.

Chewing tobacco does not make tobacco less addictive. In fact chewing tobacco users are equally addicted to nicotine just as much as those who smoke. In real terms people who switch from smoking tobacco to chewing tobacco have been shown by research to posses an untold uphill task should they finally decide to quit tobacco use. They will most like suffer from severe nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Anti-tobacco campaigners must be called to realize the effects of a biased anti-smoking campaign whose main aim is on smoking cigarettes. People generally have a tendency to switch from one nicotine delivery method to another in a bid to escape the much talked about dangers of smoking. The no-smoking campaign should therefore encompass even all other forms of tobacco use with just as much strength purpose.

dangers of smoking.
