How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It
by Joseph Califano, Jr.

High Society

Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society.

Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because teens are already struggling with so many other issues, however, those around them may confuse teens and depression with teens searching for their identities. While some extreme behaviors can be indicative of teens with depression, there are some circumstances which are far more likely to bring on a bout of depression than others.

Causes of Teen Depression
If you know a teen who has recently experienced one of these events, you might help him or her by observing any ensuing behavioral changes which point to depression. Teens are no different from anyone else when it comes to their reactions to the death of a loved one, unhappy home life, or the end of a romance. Teens and depression also find each other following episodes of being bullied or other forms of abuse.

Although most teens are working very hard at establishing their own identities, they are still dependent on their parents, family members, and friends for both physical care and social affirmation. Being deprived of any of these can cause tremendous stress, followed by overwhelming feelings of insecurity.

That intense insecurity, when coupled with the confused feeling borough on by the hormonal changes of adolescence, is one of the primary factors linking teens and depression. Teens with depression, unless diagnosed and treated, can engage n substance abuse, eating disorders, and self-destructive behaviors like cutting or sexual promiscuity. They may turn their anger inward and consider suicide, or direct it towards others and become violent.

Teen and depression can be a lethal combination. Adolescence is painful enough without the added burden of clinical depression; unless those teens with depression are diagnosed and treated, they may pay for the consequences of their depression-controlled behaviors for the rest of their lives.
