by Joseph Califano, Jr.
Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society. Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

Boys and girls boarding schools across the nation are dealing with teens recovering from prescription drug additions. Initially, teens get a hold of prescription drugs for many different reasons, from getting high to treating pain. Statistics reveal that teenage boys are most likely to turn to prescription drugs to get high, while girls do it to self-medicate. However, long-term prescription drug use leads to physical dependence. Most teens get addicted when they continue taking larger doses to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

Doctors are usually never involved. In 2008, nearly 2,000 teenagers per day used a prescription drug without a doctor’s guidance for the first time, according to NIDA.
And teens know that getting pills from home is much easier than finding it on the streets. According to one study, 35 percent of high school seniors agreed that opioid drugs such as Vicodin and methadone would be “very easy to get.”
