How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It
by Joseph Califano, Jr.

High Society

Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society.

Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

The heart

Regular consumption of alcohol can weaken the heart greatly. The protective covering of membranes that line the walls of the heart are degenerated. These membranes turn cartilaginous and in some cases, calcareous. Valvular disorder, a commonly seen disorder is a side-effect of unhealthy consumption of alcohol. In alcoholics, valvular disorder may become permanent. Blood vessels are greatly damaged by alcohol. Blood vessels lose their power to pump blood and feed the heart. Muscular fibre are replaced by fatty cells at many places all over the heart and hence, the power of contraction is greatly reduced.

The Stomach

Consumption of alcohol destroys the digestive capabilities of the stomach. The secretion of digestive liquids is also inhibited by alcohol. Dyspepsia is also commonly seen in alcoholics. It is a similar damage of the more permanent type. Alcoholics suffering such symptoms will gradually start to lose their appetite and tend to drink more, although the shift in eating patterns is slow enough to recognize.

Alcoholics, when feeling the symptoms or side-effects, may notice that having a glass of alcohol may relieve them of the problems temporarily, but ultimately, its not a permanent solution. If such patterns continue for a long time, the vitals of the body may break down and the person may be in deep trouble.
