by Joseph Califano, Jr.
Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society. Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

A Wild Frat Party
A very wild frat party took place two weeks ago. Sarah, a girl in our psychology class, and one of the frat sisters, invited us.
We drove to one of the sister's apartment, were the party was to be held. Being that it was our first time going to a frat party, we couldn't help but feeling extremely excited. So many stories we've heard about how much fun frat parties turn out to be.

We arrived in front of a ten-story apartment building, in Chelsea Manhattan. The party was in full swing; hot music, fun people, and best of all, food, lots of food! There had to be about forty to fifty people coming in and out, luckily, the apartment was very big and spacious.
We quickly adapted to the environment, and pretty soon we were chatting away with all sorts of people. One thing we noticed was that there were a couple of underage girls consuming alcohol, and that worried us. After a while, we must have had the best time dancing and enjoying ourselves, because around 2:30 in the morning, were ready to go home and hit the bed. Before we had gone to the party, we had agreed that we wouldn't drink, instead, we settled for a couple of cokes. When we went to the kitchen to say goodbye to Sarah, we noticed how drunk she was. She was surrounded by about five or six empty bottles of beer; she didn't look well at all. Sarah confided to us that it wasn't her intention to drink, but because people were pressuring her to do it, she ended up extremely drunk.

We volunteered to take her home; but being that she was underage (19), she quickly turned the offer down, and decided she would sleep over at another friend's house instead. Sarah knew that if she went home drunk to her parents, she would never hear the end of it.
Sarah became extremely ill after drinking so much alcohol. She was experiencing serious withdrawal symptoms, such as vomiting, headaches, and weakness. She didn't think about the consequences of drinking, because very often teenagers don't consider that important.
As a result of her underage drinking, Sarah had to sleep over at another friend's house in order to conceal the truth from her parents. Furthermore, she violated her parents' trust in her by consuming alcohol, which would not only get her in serious conflicts with her parents, but also with the law. By drinking being underage, she violated the law that required people to be twenty-one and older in order to consume alcohol. In addition, Sarah put herself in serious danger because drinking takes away people's ability to think and process information correctly. Sarah wasn't aware of her surroundings because her brain wasn't functioning properly; therefore she could have gotten herself in serious problems like car accidents and rape. Sarah's underage drinking is clearly an example of deviance She is obviously breaking the norms of underage drinking. Due to her lack of maturity, she wasn't able to control her drinking, and as a result became extremely ill. Underage drinking is an act of deviance that's very often committed by young people today. Society frowns upon underage drinking, because very often this act of deviance results in chaos; for example, car accidents, and serious health issues. Young people today do not realize how their bodies are not developed enough to handle liquor at such a young age. Indeed, underage drinking affects every member of society. It is society's responsibility to ensure the safety of people, therefore, by providing guidance and support to young people, we may very well prevent them from engaging in serious behaviors, in this case, underage drinking. Laws are written and enforced mainly to maintain peace and order in a society. Thus, laws that are made to prevent youth today from consuming alcohol should be preserved in an effort to maintain a stable society.
