How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It
by Joseph Califano, Jr.

High Society

Joseph Califano, Jr. describes his new book, High Society: How Substance Abuse Ravages America and What to Do About It, as a "call to arms". Califano, Chairman and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, presents in devastating detail the many ways in which substance abuse infects all aspects of American society.

Many of the statistics he weaves into his argument are familiar. In their entirety, however, they paint the portrait of a nation drenched in alcohol and substance abuse.

Drug screen is intended for the detection of drugs in the system. Generally, drug screens are presupposed for specific drugs that were used recently and the ones that showed on the previous drug result. This is a quick procedure and the result can be obtained the next day. However, it should be taken into consideration that drug screen can also result positive for prescription medications. Therefore, it is a less accurate procedure to some extent than a drug test.

Drug test, in its turn, is a deeper version of analysis and it helps to detect various drugs. Tests can show with a great accuracy extent what drugs were used and when and therefore they are more expensive and take longer time. Generally, due to the latter two reasons employers prefer drug screens.
